Exercise 3

  1. These are the starting images:
    BackgroundBalloons
The goal is to place unfocussed ballons into foreground of the first image.

  2. Open the balloons image.

  3. Unmask the black area of the balloon image using Mask>Set F2,F3 to Mask by Color and press F2.   This can be tricky because the unmask display is black therefore you won't see it against a black background.

  4. Change color space to RGB Gamma 2.2.

  5. Store image wirh Shift+1.

  6. Make the unmasked region white by clicking Basic>Negative.   Press S to remove mask display to see white part of image.

  7. (Press S again to reinstate mask display) Press I key to invert mask.

  8. Color unmasked area black by pressing 0 and then remove mask by pressing M.   The result should look like this:
    Black and White

  9. Apply Blur/Sharpen>Lens Blur with a radius setting of 10.   The result should look like this:
    Lens Blurred Black and White

  10. Change color space to Log CMY.   Adding images in Log CMY space is the same as multiplying them RGB space.

  11. Press X and then open background image into the top layer, i.e., Layer 2 of 2.

  12. Add layers (Layer>Basic Operations>Set F2/F3 to Add/Subtract Layers) to get this:
    Background with Blurred Black

  13. Press X key to place Layer 1 on top and then press key 1 to recall previously saved image.   Note that this automatically changes color space back to RGB Gamma 2.2.

  14. Press M key to remove mask.

  15. Apply Blur/Sharpen>Lens Blur with a radius setting of 10 to get this:
    Blurred Balloons

  16. Add layers (Layer>Set F2/F3 to Add/Subtract Layers) to get this:

    Blurred Foreground
